Works in Process

Work in process is always more fun, I think. Since I don't have any major shows coming soon, I am working at whatever pace I feel that day. Here are the things that are slowly coming to fruition. Email me if you have any questions about a work or inquiries about purchasing.

THE MESSAGES WE SEND

All cultural backgrounds share one thing in common... the struggles of teaching the next generation how to navigate the

ever-changing world.

In this series bees are the carriers of knowledge, found in the text & the

signage is recognizable enough to allow the viewer to bring their own nostalgia to the work.

Library Card

Library System

The aging library system is reminiscent of the aging ideals being passed down to our younger generations. The tinge of time on the pages reminds us to take a second look at what our life lessons are really teaching before handing them down.

Mary's

Currently under reconstruction.

Mary is a dear friend and fellow artist. She commissioned this piece after seeing a previous work, hanging in my own home. In its making, the work has taken on a different personality than that I set out to design. It is this reason that I am parting with this original and going back to the drawing board for Mary's commission.

This piece began as an ode to small, hidden, parts of our friendship and became an experiment of sorts in new ways of bringing recycled and found materials together.

Mixed-Media: vintage McCall's pattern paper, vintage stamp envelopes, vintage wallpaper, found paper, canvas cutouts, acrylic paint, acrylic marker, pen & ink, on canvas. The work is free-hanging, or lacking final touches. Any interested collector need only express their desired final placement to discuss shipping and final hanging requirements.

Scrap Pollen

The original "gossip girl" leans in to share the news with a ranunculus. Recycled canvas, acrylic paint, acrylic marker, image transfer, pen & ink.

Pollen Specimen

Pollen is everywhere; in every country, culture, home, outdoor area... everywhere. It is passed around by people, but most often bees, those that we need to protect. Recycled canvas, acrylic paint, pen & ink, acrylic marker.

MS River Dreams

Dear, E.G.

I often dream of past experiences mixed with all kinds of fantasy. They are vivid and tactile, like this memory of boating lazily through the inlets off of the Mississippi River with the houseboats. Gesso, acrylic paint, canvas cutouts, acrylic marker, on gallery-wrapped canvas.

454 Silo

This brick silo still stands on highway 454 just outside of Greenville, Mississippi, tree and all. Acrylic paint, canvas cutouts, image transfers, acrylic marker, on gallery-wrapped canvas.

16" x 20"

The spruce sapling lives among McCall's girls playing at night under the moonlight. Acrylic paint, canvas cutouts, vintage dictionary pages, acrylic marker, pen and ink, on gallery wrapped canvas.

Drawing Lessons

Bees are the eternal spreader of generational knowledge, pollen being its symbol. This work was inspired by my paternal grandmother who was an educator and an artist herself. This is her vintage drawing board, found among her art supplies upon her passing. Acrylic paint, acrylic marker, canvas cutouts, pen and ink, mounted on vintage drawing board.

approximately 24" x 18"

Thanks, Jack; found paper, vintage advertising, acrylic paint, pen & ink, on canvas; 2023
I would love to sarcastically thank my late father for the constant reminder of the days we could have a smoke and a laugh. I'm sure he would find it entertaining that something that is so unhealthy has become the strongest symbol of his presence.

Sara Turnipseed

This small work is a conversation I have had many times in life & in my dreams. Where did my creativity come from? I always traced it directly back to my grandmother, Sara. In my mesh of memories, she was the first to hand me real art supplies. Missing the opportunities to discuss material & process with her are found here with the light molding paste, gold paint, & image of the chalk pastel

Mixed-media: acrylic paint, found paper, light molding paste, pen & ink, canvas on wood; 4" x 6" x 2"

Close up image of small mixed-media painting of bee hive & paint swirls.

Hive Making

Building a hive can be no easier for the honey bee than it is to create a hive of exceptional people that all look out for one another. It takes a lot of time and a lot of hard work, for everyone involved.

Mixed-media: acrylic paint, acrylic marker, pen & ink, found paper, & canvas on wood.

Mississippi River Landscapes

It is exciting to try to capture all the essence of a place, dear to one's heart, in a single image. It cannot be done, but the challenge is always inviting. This work combines the house boats of the Mississippi River inlets with the flat farm fields, & fiery sunset colors.

Mixed-media: found papers, McCall's pattern papers, acrylic paint, acrylic marker, pen & ink, on wood.

24 " x 24"

24 inch by 24 inch mixed-media painting featuring house boats floating on a fiery sunset, above rows crop fields.

Matchbook

I am forever drawn to vintage advertising, especially that of cigarettes. Their advertisements used to be so elegant & enticing, even when tailored to children. It is interesting to see the aging of the image & material go hand-in-hand with the aging of the desire to smoke. It seems fitting that those would walk together into oblivion.
